On Oct. 1, South Korea showcased its “Cheongwang” (천광) series of high-energy laser weapons during the 78th Armed Forces Day parade, including the first public appearance of the Cheongwang Block 2 8×8 wheeled laser combat vehicle prototype and a prototype 100-kW towed high-energy laser weapon system designed to counter rockets, artillery shells and mortars. However, a live counter-drone demonstration involving the 20-kW Cheongwang Block 1 fixed-site laser system encountered several problems. Four target drones were prepared for the demonstration. The first crashed during takeoff after a sudden gust of wind damaged the fiber-optic cable used for control. A second drone was unable to complete the flight because of unfavorable weather conditions and flew beyond the designated safety zone; the military subsequently cut its power and brought it down. The remaining two drones entered the laser engagement area and were successfully shot down by the Cheongwang system. South Korea has previously experienced several drone and unmanned aircraft crashes during military-related events. On Sept. 16, several civilian drones, including a jet-powered UAV, crashed during an advanced unmanned-drone technology demonstration hosted by South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense. In August, two medium-sized loitering munitions both crashed into the sea during live-fire testing conducted by the Republic of Korea Navy and the Agency for Defense Development aboard the ROKS Marado amphibious assault ship. The Cheongwang Block 1 was developed under the leadership of South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development and was deployed in late 2024. In 2025, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said that localizing the laser oscillator had increased the system’s domestic content from 76% to 90%, while its output power was increased from 20 kW to 30 kW. source:https://t.co/cs0Vp1D7Ze
